The Challenge

A major professional sports organization needed real-time wind sensor data delivered to broadcast booths during live events. WiFi and LTE are unreliable in large crowds — especially as tens of thousands of people move through a venue, connectivity drops and latency spikes. Devices needed to deploy to new venues every week, so they had to be small, lightweight, portable, and simple enough for non-technical crew to set up and tear down.

The Solution

Measured designed a custom chip to meet the specific power, connectivity, and sensor requirements. Hardwired Ethernet ensures reliable real-time data delivery regardless of crowd density — no WiFi or LTE dependency. The enclosure is 3D-printed on commercial equipment in carbon fiber reinforced ASA, providing UV and heat resistance for outdoor deployment. Threaded screw inserts and rubber gaskets create field-deployable water resistance. CNLinko Ethernet and pin connectors provide durable, weatherproof cabling. The result: a device that reads a wind sensor and delivers data to the broadcast booth in under one second.

The Impact

Before

  • ×Unreliable wireless connectivity in large crowds
  • ×Off-the-shelf devices too large or fragile for weekly transport
  • ×Latency too high for live broadcast requirements

After

  • Sub-second sensor-to-broadcast-booth latency
  • Reliable in crowds of 100,000+
  • Weekly deploy and teardown by non-technical crew
  • Compact, ruggedized design built for transport
  • 5 devices deployed with expansion planned

Five devices are currently deployed, traveling in equipment trucks to new venues each week. The compact form factor and ruggedized design mean non-technical crew can set up and tear down the system without issue — and the broadcast booth gets wind data in under a second.

Technical Highlights

  • Custom PCB designed for specific power, connectivity, and sensor requirements
  • Carbon fiber reinforced ASA (CF-ASA) — UV and heat resistant 3D printing
