Case Study
Portable Weather Intelligence for Live Event Safety
Real-time weather monitoring and lightning risk assessment built for DTN, a global leader in weather intelligence.

The Challenge
On-site meteorologists at live events needed portable, reliable weather data for real-time risk assessments — protecting both players and fans at large public gatherings. The previous workflow involved complex data logger setups, running cables across public walkways, finding power sources, and using isolated software that didn't integrate with other systems. No historical data was persisted. No analytics were possible. Setup was cumbersome and the equipment wasn't designed to be redeployed frequently.

The Solution
Measured built a self-contained, portable weather station housed in a rugged Pelican case. The system pairs an RM Young 93500 ResponseOne Pro — measuring wind speed, wind direction, temperature, humidity, and barometric pressure — with a Boltek EFM-100C atmospheric electric field mill for lightning detection. LTE cellular connectivity streams 1-second telemetry to the Measured platform, which feeds directly into DTN's weather application. There, the data is paired with NOAA observations and private lightning detection networks to produce hyper-local weather reports and lightning risk assessments. Setup is simple: unpack the case, extend the tripod, power on — operational in minutes.

The Impact
Before
- ×Cumbersome setup with lots of long wired cables or radios
- ×Standalone data loggers with unfriendly software
- ×No historical data persistence
- ×No integration with other weather systems
- ×No analytics or trend analysis
After
- ✓Operational in minutes — true plug and play
- ✓Real-time streaming to custom weather apps
- ✓Full historical data persistence and analytics
- ✓Integrated with NOAA and private lightning networks
- ✓Deployed globally at 50+ events per year
Three stations are now deployed globally, traveling by truck to week-long events. What used to require hours of complex setup now takes minutes — and for the first time, meteorologists have historical data they can analyze and learn from.
Real-Time Data

Captured during an early active spring storm — this data was streamed live from a station running in a residential backyard, demonstrating the system's ability to detect and track approaching thunderstorm activity in real time.
